Maker Faire is an event created by Make magazine to "celebrate arts, crafts, engineering, science projects and the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) mindset".

Flasgship Faires

Flagship Maker Faires are held in San Mateo, CA ("Bay Area"), Detroit, and New York. The New York Maker Faire is also known as "World Maker Faire".[1]

Past events

The first Maker Faire was held April 22 – 23, 2006, at the San Mateo Fairgrounds. It included six exposition and workshop pavilions, a 5-acre (20,000 m2) outdoor midway, over 100 exhibiting makers, hands-on workshops, demonstrations and DIY competitions.

The second Maker Faire was held in Austin, Texas, October 20 - 21, 2007.[2]

Maker Faire 2008 was held on 3 and 4 May at the San Mateo Fairgrounds. Highlights of the Faire included a human-sized Mouse Trap board game, kinetic squid sculpture, bicycle-powered music stage, a solar-powered chariot pulled by an Arnold Schwarzenegger robot,[3] and over 500 booths from different makers. There were approximately 65,000 people in attendance.[4][5] Featured guests included Adam Savage, Stephanie Pearl-McPhee, Lee David Zlotoff[6], Tony Baxter and Eepybird.

An additional 2008 Maker Faire was held on October 18-19, 2008, in Austin, Texas.[7]

The 2009 Bay Area Maker Faire was held on May 30-31 at the San Mateo Fairgrounds. Guests included Adam Savage.

Maker Faire Bay Area 2010 was held May 22 and 23, at the San Mateo County Event Center. Featured makers included Adam Savage, Eepybird, OK Go, ArcAttack, and The Crucible.

Maker Faire Detroit 2010 was held on July 31 and August 1.

Maker Faire New York 2010 was held on September 25-26.

2011 Flagship Faires

Mini Maker Faires and Other Events

Make Magazine assists independent event organizers in producing small-scale Maker Faire events in local communities.

We call independently-organized events "Mini Maker Faires." Community-driven Mini Maker Faires have sprouted up around the United States, with events in Ann Arbor, Sebastopol, Aspen, Kansas City, Durham, Oakland, and Boston. Canada now has three Mini Maker Faires: Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver.[8]

2011 Mini Maker Faires have been held in Pittsburgh PA, Phoenix AZ, Oakland CA, Fort Wayne IN, Fishers IN, Providence RI, Atlanta GA, Brighton (UK), Kansas City, Raleigh NC, Poulsbo WA, Ann Arbor MI, Toronto (CA), Linthicum MD, Urbana IL.

The first Maker Faire in the United Kingdom took place on March 14-15, 2009, in Newcastle upon Tyne, as a joint venture with the Newcastle ScienceFest. The 2009 Maker Faire Rhode Island was scheduled for September 6-19.[10] The first Maker Faire North Carolina 2010 was held on April 25 in Durham, North Carolina. It moved to Raleigh, North Carolina for 2011.[11]
